I design products with a systems brain and an illustrator’s eye.

I like complicated problems, clear thinking, good interaction and the small visual decisions that make an experience feel considered.

Portrait of Omowunmi Junaid

I’m Omowunmi.

I’m a Product Designer & Illustrator with 5+ years of experience creating digital products across fintech, SaaS, education, construction tech, healthtech and consumer products.

Product design is the centre of my work, but illustration has always been part of how I think visually. I like complicated problems, good interaction, thoughtful details, and products that make me stop and think, ‘Okay, how is this supposed to work?’

I design digital products, draw things, ask a lot of questions, and occasionally spend far too long deciding whether a button really needs to be there.

Not exactly a straight a line.

I didn't start out thinking I'd become a Product Designer. I was actually considering graphic design when I came across UI/UX design and started learning about it. The more I explored it, the more I realised I really liked the combination of creativity, problem-solving and technology.

That eventually pulled me deeper into product design. I started paying more attention to what happens behind the interface, why products work the way they do, and how all the little decisions come together to create an experience.

Somewhere along the way, I also found a love for coding and started learning about mobile development. I’m still learning today because I don’t think learning is something you eventually graduate from. There is always another thing to understand, another tool to try, or another rabbit hole to fall into.

And yes, I also graduated from Mathematics Education along the way. Which, in hindsight, probably explains why I enjoy structure, logic, and asking ‘but why?’ a little too much.

I like the complicated bit.

Give me a product with complicated workflows, different types of users, lots of moving parts and a slightly confusing process, and I’m interested.

I enjoy figuring out how all the pieces connect, what people actually need, what happens when things don’t go as planned, and how to make something feel easier to use without stripping away what makes it useful.

I’m not just interested in making a screen look good. I want to understand the problem behind it, question the process, and figure out how the experience can work better.

That’s probably why I’ve found myself enjoying SaaS platforms, internal tools, fintech products, operational systems and other products where there is usually a lot more happening behind the screen than you can see.

Then there's the visual side.

Even though product design is where most of my work lives, I’ve never really stopped being a visual person.

I love typography, colour, composition, illustration, branding and all the little details that give something a personality.

Illustration became another way for me to explore that side of myself. Sometimes it helps explain a product. Sometimes it gives a brand a face. Sometimes there isn’t really a reason. I just wanted to draw it.

I like having both sides of my practice. One keeps me thinking about systems, usability and how things work. The other lets me play a little more.

Apparently, one creative outlet wasn’t enough.

I like helping other designers figure things out too.

I’m the Lead Product Design Mentor for HNG’s Product Design track, where I mentor designers through the programme every year.

The HNG internship typically starts with 10,000+ participants, with around 2,000+ designers joining the Product Design track at the beginning. I’ve had the opportunity to mentor a number of those designers as they work through the programme, build projects, receive feedback, and figure out their own design process.

Mentoring is one of those things that has become more fulfilling than I expected. There’s something really nice about watching someone go from ‘I don’t know how to do this’ to actually figuring it out. Mentoring has also made me a better designer. You understand something differently when you have to explain it to someone else. And sometimes someone asks a question that makes you go, ‘Hmm. Good question.’ Then you realise you need to go and rethink your own explanation.

A few things about me

Outside of design, I like movies, music, food, the beach, drawing and discovering random things that somehow become my latest obsession.

I’m also a huge connoisseur of plantain. Fried, roasted, boiled, with rice, with beans, on its own. I’m not picky. Plantain has never disappointed me, and I will stand by that statement.

I’m curious by default, slightly obsessive about details, and love occasionally convincing myself that I can learn one more thing.

What I do

My skills and interests.

Product design

I like products that make me think. I work through the messy parts, connect the moving pieces, and turn complicated ideas into products people can actually use.

UX & interaction

I care about what happens between the screens too. Flows, decisions, navigation, edge cases, tiny interactions, and all the things that make a product feel obvious when you use it.

Visual / UI

I like interfaces that are clear without feeling plain. Good hierarchy, thoughtful details, a bit of character, and enough visual restraint to keep the product doing its job.

Illustration

Sometimes a screen needs an illustration. Sometimes a brand needs a character. Sometimes I just want to draw something because I can. I make illustrations that give products and ideas a little more personality.
